WHY THIS TOUR IS DIFFERENT FROM OTHER OHRID TOURS

Ohrid + Saint Naum: The Complete Lake Experience

Most Ohrid day tours from Skopje stop only at the town center. This tour goes further — all the way to the southern tip of Lake Ohrid, just meters from the Albanian border, to visit one of the most magical and spiritually significant sites in the entire Balkans: the Monastery of Saint Naum.

Here’s why Saint Naum makes this tour extraordinary:

The Legend of the Healing Springs — At the base of the monastery cliff, the Black Drim River emerges from Lake Ohrid through a series of crystal-clear springs so pure and transparent that you can see the sandy bottom at depths of several meters. According to local legend, Saint Naum himself blessed these springs in the 9th century, and pilgrims have been visiting them for healing for over 1,000 years.

The Peacocks — The monastery grounds are home to a colony of free-roaming peacocks that have lived here for generations. Walking among these magnificent birds in the peaceful monastery garden is an experience unlike anything else in Macedonia.

The Heartbeat of Saint Naum — Inside the monastery church, Saint Naum’s tomb is preserved in a small chapel. Local tradition holds that if you press your ear to the tomb, you can still hear the heartbeat of the saint. Whether you believe it or not, the experience is deeply moving. The Rowboat Springs — Hiring a small rowboat to drift slowly through the labyrinth of crystal springs is one of the most peaceful and beautiful experiences available anywhere in North Macedonia. The water is impossibly clear, the willows hang overhead, and the monastery walls rise above you.

SAINT NAUM MONASTERY — COMPLETE GUIDE

History

The Monastery of Saint Naum was founded in 905 AD by Saint Naum of Ohrid, one of the most important disciples of Saints Cyril and Methodius — the creators of the Cyrillic alphabet. Saint Naum came to Lake Ohrid after being expelled from Bulgaria, and founded this monastery on a dramatic cliff at the lake’s southern shore.

The monastery has been destroyed and rebuilt multiple times over the centuries — by Byzantine emperors, Ottoman rulers, and Serbian kings — each leaving their mark on its architecture and art. The current church of Saints Archangels Michael and Gabriel dates primarily from the 16th-19th centuries and contains stunning frescoes from multiple periods.

What to See at Saint Naum

The Monastery Church — The main church is dedicated to the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel. Inside, centuries of accumulated frescoes cover every surface in the Byzantine tradition. The tomb of Saint Naum himself is located in a small chapel within the church — one of the most sacred sites in Orthodox Christianity in the region.

The Monastery Walls and Towers — The perimeter walls and defensive towers date from the Ottoman period and offer spectacular views over the lake, the springs, and the Albanian mountains across the water.

The Black Drim Springs (Izvori na Crni Drim) — The springs emerge directly from the lake bed at the base of the monastery cliff, creating a network of channels and pools of extraordinary clarity. Rowboats are available for hire (small fee) to explore the springs from the water — an absolute must.

The Peacock Garden — The peacocks of Saint Naum have become one of the monastery’s most beloved features. Dozens of these magnificent birds roam freely through the grounds, sometimes displaying their full plumage for lucky visitors.

The Lake Shore — The monastery sits on a promontory above the lake, and the surrounding shoreline is one of the most beautiful spots on all of Lake Ohrid. On clear days you can see deep into Albanian territory across the water.

THE STRAŽA STOP — A HIDDEN LOCAL EXPERIENCE

One of the most charming and authentic moments of this tour happens on the mountain road between Tetovo and Saint Naum, at a traditional roadside stop known as Straža.

Here, at a small family-run stall in the mountain pass, you’ll have the opportunity to try mekici — traditional Macedonian fried dough that has been made the same way for generations. Hot, crispy on the outside, soft inside, and served with local cheese or jam, mekici are the ultimate Macedonian comfort food and a beloved local tradition.

This brief stop is a perfect example of what makes private tours with Millennium Express different from standard tourist buses — we take you to the places where locals actually stop, eat, and live.
