Matka Canyon is one of the most significant natural and cultural-historical sites in Macedonia. Caves -The most famous landmark in the canyon. Medieval Monasteries and Churches The canyon is often referred to as "Little Mount Athos" due to the high density of religious sites: Monastery of St. Andrew: Built in 1389 by Andreaš, the son of King Volkašin. It sits right on the shore of the lake and is famous for its exceptional medieval frescoes. Church of St. Nikola Shishevski: Located on a high cliff overlooking the lake, it offers one of the most beautiful panoramic views of the entire canyon. Monastery of the Assumption of the Most Holy Mother of God: A 14th-century monastery located at the entrance to the canyon, which still houses an active sisterhood of nuns. St. Spas and St. Nedela: Smaller churches and ruins located along the various hiking trails.
  • 4. Fortress Ruins Markov Grad: Remains of a medieval fortress that served to defend the entrance to the canyon. It is believed to have been built as a refuge for the local population during the Ottoman conquests.

Kayak Course: A world-renowned whitewater kayak course that hosts major international competitions.
